Having Trouble Understanding Japanese? NEC Has The Solution

17 Dec 2007

At present, it can turn Japanese traveler’s words into English instantly, bridging the communications gap by more than a mile. This is made possible by storing the software on a small microchip that can fit right inside a cellphone, capable of recognizing approximately 50,000 Japanese words for smooth translation of travel phrases such as "How do I get to the museum".

While it is possible to come up with a vocal English translation technically, NEC is not going to consider that idea at this point in time. No one has heard or witnessed this new magic from NEC, so at the moment, take this as a "that's what NEC says". NEC would need to study how to identify voices on the phone precisely. Another problem would be how the person on the other side of the line could know if his or her words are being translated correctly.
